North discovery

Experience the wilder north part of Martinique! We’ll discover the rainforest, the famous Mt. Pélée volcano and the Carbet-mountains, taste excellent rums at the Dépaz-distillery and learn all about the tragic eruption of 1902 that wiped out the old capital, Saint-Pierre.

Leaving from Fort-de-France, our first stop is the Balata church, a miniature replica of the Sacre Coeur basilica in Paris.

We then drive through the lush rainforest, and stop shortly at the pretty Alma-river at the foot of the Carbet-mountains. Our next stop is the Pelée-volcano. We drive up the volcano to a parking, from where the hike trail starts. From there a 5 min walk takes us to a viewpoint, from where you’ll be able to see all the north of the island on a clear day.

Our next stop is the Dépaz-distillery where we visit the distillery, the garden and the rum boutique where  you can taste and buy excellent agricole rum. Follows a visit in the historical town of St. Pierre and the volcanological museum as well as the ruins of the theater. Also a short stop at the fruit market and the old stock market. After we head back to Fort-de-France through the Caribbean coast passing quaint fishing villages like Carbet and Bellefontaine.

Included in the tour: soft drinks (water, juice) and rum punch, transportation in a private,air-conditioned mini-van seating 8 persons, entrance fees to the Franck Perret museum.

Duration: 5 to 7 hours depending on point of departure

Balata Garden & St-Pierre

 

Visit the prettiest garden in Martinique and stroll admist thousands of tropical plants and flowers. The highlight of the garden is a walk on suspended bridges in the mahogany trees, from where you’ll have spectacular views. On the way to the garden we stop at the Balata church, from where you’ll have a nice view on the bay of Fort-de-France and can visit the church.

 The second part of the tour leads you through the rainforest, at the feet of the Carbet – mountains, to arrive in Saint-Pierre, Martinique’s old capital completely destroyed in the eruption of 1902. We will visit the volcanological museum and the ruins of the old theater.

We head back to Fort-de-France through the Caribbean coast passing quaint fishing villages like Carbet and Bellefontaine.
